Director of Engineering – Luxury Hotel (Sydney CBD)
Full-Time | Executive Leadership Role
Sydney CBD

We are partnering with a globally recognised luxury hospitality brand to appoint a Director of Engineering for a landmark, high-end hotel in the Sydney CBD.
This is a rare opportunity to lead engineering operations across a large-scale, premium 5-star asset (700+ rooms), including a heritage-listed component, while delivering an exciting pipeline of major refurbishment and infrastructure projects.

The Opportunity:

Reporting directly to the General Manager, this role sits on the executive leadership team and will take full ownership of the engineering strategy, capital works program, compliance, and operational performance of the asset.
You will lead a high-performing engineering function while driving a multi-year CAPEX program, including:

  • Full guest room refurbishments
  • Major mechanical and electrical plant upgrades
  • Asset lifecycle planning and long-term investment strategy

This role is focused on strategic leadership, governance, and project delivery, not just day-to-day maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational Leadership & Team Management
  • Provide leadership and direction to the engineering team, including Chief Engineer and technical staff
  • Set performance expectations across maintenance, compliance, safety, and presentation standards
  • Drive a high-performance culture, including training, development, and succession planning
  • Manage workforce planning, resourcing, and contractor engagement

CAPEX & Project Delivery

  • Lead and execute a multi-year CAPEX program aligned to asset strategy
  • Develop business cases, budgets, and ROI analysis for capital projects
  • Oversee project lifecycle from design, procurement, and tendering through to delivery, commissioning, and defect close-out
  • Manage variations, risk registers, and cost control to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget
  • Coordinate refurbishment works while minimising disruption to hotel operations and guest experience

Financial Management

  • Own and manage engineering OPEX and CAPEX budgets
  • Deliver accurate forecasting, financial reporting, and variance analysis
  • Ensure cost control, procurement compliance, and value engineering outcomes

Compliance, Safety & Risk

  • Ensure compliance with NCC/BCA, WHS legislation, fire safety, and NSW regulatory requirements
  • Oversee Annual Fire Safety Statement (AFSS) and essential services compliance
  • Lead incident management, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintain risk registers and ensure safe systems of work across contractors and staff

Stakeholder & Vendor Management

  • Act as the key engineering interface with senior leadership, operations, and external stakeholders
  • Manage contractor performance, procurement processes, and service delivery standards
  • Liaise with local authorities, certifiers, and heritage consultants to secure approvals and protect the asset
  • Provide regular updates on project progress, risks, and operational performance

Asset Performance, Sustainability & Innovation

  • Drive energy efficiency, sustainability, and ESG initiatives
  • Implement asset lifecycle strategies across plant, equipment, and infrastructure
  • Leverage data and systems to optimise building performance and reduce operational costs

Technical & Documentation Oversight

  • Ensure accurate maintenance of asset registers, warranties, as-built drawings, and documentation
  • Oversee building systems performance including mechanical, electrical, and fire systems
  • Ensure operational readiness, commissioning, and handover of all projects

What We’re Looking For:

  • Proven experience in a Director of Engineering / Chief Engineer / Senior Facilities leadership role within a high-end hotel in Australia
  • Experience managing large, complex hotel assets (ideally 300+ rooms, large-scale preferred)
  • Strong track record delivering major CAPEX programs, refurbishments, and plant upgrades
  • Deep understanding of mechanical & electrical systems, asset lifecycle, and building performance
  • Experience operating within heritage-listed or highly regulated environments (highly regarded)
  • Strong knowledge of NCC/BCA, WHS, and statutory compliance frameworks
  • Excellent leadership, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills

Why Apply?

  • Lead engineering for one of Sydney’s most prestigious luxury hotel assets
  • Be part of a significant transformation and refurbishment program
  • Executive-level role with strong visibility and influence
  • Work within a globally recognised hospitality brand

All applications will be handled with strict confidentiality.
